A GREENER WORLD

Learn more about the new California Academy of Sciences building in San Francisco by architect Renzo Piano.

Sustainable design, also referred to as “green design” is a core philosophy at CitiZen Design Studio and is part of the meaning behind the name of our studio. It is about being a responsible "citizen" of the earth.

Many people don’t realize the spaces that they work and live in are living organisms. Like humans, they need natural air and light and they need to be “healthy”. Sustainable design is simply that – using design as a tool for creating healthier environments and minimizing the negative impact to the earth.

Whether it is specifying recycled materials or finishes that are non-toxic, or siting a building appropriately to its surroundings, responsible design takes all of these elements into consideration.

We do not try to push an agenda on our clients, but we do try and educate them about their options and the best choices for their future spaces. Some of our projects may not seem “green” at first glance, but each one has taken some element into consideration. Whether it’s window placement, a certain sustainable finish or specifying a low-VOC paint that doesn’t off-gas toxic fumes, sustainability is always our guide throughout the process.
